New lead: possible Guatemala destination

Someone who met Cat earlier in her travels - in May - says that Cat wanted to meet a woman who lives in Guatemala at Lake Atitlan. She was some kind of astronomer.

Cat met this woman at a hostel - El Rincon de Los Camellos in San Cristobal de las Casas.

It sounds like the Guatemalan woman was a regular guest at that hostel.

Can someone translate this on the blog? We will work to contact the hostel.

We have several networks in Guatemala posting her information - we will pass this along.

We have also contacted the US Embassy in Guatemala and will add this to their information.

Thanks!

  1. Do you mean that you need someone to translate the text into a Spanish message?

I do not know Spanish. However, I wanted to suggest that perhaps it was Mayan Astronomy. Also sometimes spelled MAYA ASTRONOMY. This is very well known/studied in parts of Mexico, especially related to ancient ruins as the ancient Mayans were said to be better mathematicians than the Egyptians, and their calculations of astronomy more accurate.

The summer solstice was on June 21 of this year, perhaps it was some type of workshop in observance of the solstice....? Just a thought.

  2. If she is at Lago Atitlan, she may be at --

i used to stay/live there in san marcos. it is part of Lago Atitlan. it is an amazing place to study meditation. the woman that founded it and runs it is a very deeply connected individual that can read nahuals (maya astrology). a thing to keep in mind is that they offer a "moon course" meaning you are meditating and not able to use electronics, talk, etc. the course is a month long. it may explain her not being on a computer. there is also only one internet place in san marcos. if she is there, she will be safe. it is a very peaceful place. she also might be at the san marcos holistic center. anyway, i hope this helps. i used to have friends there, i will check with him to see if he can contact anyone he knows there. don't worry if you email someone there at las piramides and they don't get back to you right away. things are very slow there - almost island style. feel free to contact me if you have any questions about lago atitlan or san marcos la laguna or even guatemala. i spent 2 years living in central america, mostly in guatemala and nicaragua.

    all the best,

  3. also, it is highly unlikely that the "woman" is a regular guest at El Rincon. people who travel the central american circuit talk about the places they love and have been to. it's more likely a recommendation. and also, just because the "woman" can read mayan astrological signs or studied them, does not usually mean she is guatemalan. in fact, most guatemalan or mayan women hardly practice reading nahuales - not even guatemalan men.

    http://xelatales.blogspot.com/2009/02/nahuales.html

here's a blog to give you a better idea. i had my nahual read by a couple of people. one was a professor in mexico, another by a young artist in xela - one that owned a internet shop and the another that is writing a book about it. both young, hip and educated guys.
in other words, it's likely that the "woman" is not from guatemala or is not mayan. the woman at las piramides is neither.

  5. Anything posted here in English would be more accessible if we had Spanish included in the comments. If you can translate it and post it here as a comment, we would be grateful.

  6. If you send them the flyer, they may be able to print it out for the local internet cafe.

  7. Hola,

  8. This sounds like a place that Cat would be drawn to- My only concern is that she had no money on our last conversations with her. It is worth a email to send a flyer and hope that it gets her face out these areas. And when this is all over with I may need some serious meditation- I hope she can feel us calling for her...

  9. the comment above is helpful but has substituted El Gato (Spanish word for CAT) instead of her nickname after the words "in May/en Mayo".

When corresponding in Spanish, Catherine "Cat" Waller might be a better way to spell her name (to fix any language barriers) The tattoo description (translations on Flyer page) are also good to include when writing to Guatemala
